Born and raised in West London, director/producer Ian Softley has attempted to carry audiences into unfamiliar terrain, and he does so once again with the supernatural thriller THE SKELETON KEY. A painter, photographer, and a graduate of Cambridge University, where he studied English Literature, he worked for six years for Granada Television and the BBC directing a wide range of documentaries. He made his directorial debut in 1993 with the feature film ìBackbeat,î which he followed up with the 1995 techno-thriller ìHackers.î His most recent film, the 2001 science fiction thriller ìK-Pax,î featured Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey.

His latest cinematic venture, THE SKELETON KEY, took Softely deep into the marshes and bayous of southern Louisiana, and deals with the strange rites and rituals of hoodoo. The story focuses on the issues of believe and faith of the lead character Caroline Ellis, played by Academy Award nominee Kate Hudson. The film also stars Peter Sarsgaard, and veteran screen actors John Hurt and Gena Rowlands.

The cast, press, and director, Ian Softely, returned the The Big Easy to tour the home of voodoo and hoodoo to talk about THE SKELETON KEY.

FEARS: How familiar were you with hoodoo before taking this movie on?

Ian Softley: Not at all, but in retrospect I went back and listened to all those songs and realized there were all these references. I kind of thought, at first, that hoodoo and voodoo were sort of similar and that one was another word for the other, or sort of an alternative. Then I was aware in common parlance of hoodooing -- it just means youre kind of working spells. I was reading To Kill A Mockingbird with my daughter the other week, and the character Boo Radley refers to them finding these effigies and coins in the trunk of a tree. Thats all authentic hoodoo ritual. And one of the kids turns to him and says, ìI dont believe in any of that hoodooing.î So its the kind of stuff Id heard, but never actually specifically worked out what it was. Add a comment

BY Joseph B. Mauceri

It has been two decades since George A. Romeroís zombies have walked the screens. Once again the dead are rising to consume the living in LAND OF THE DEAD.

The world as we know it is a fleeting memory. Whatís left of civilization has walled up in fortified cities while the dead roam freely in the wasteland. The wealthy and powerful try to maintain the illusion of life as it was. Some live in exclusive towers, like Fiddlerís Green, one of the last bastions of the ruling class. On the streets below the remaining less fortunate inhabitants eke out a hard life, seeking what little comfort they can in vices like gambling, prostitution, drugs or anything that offers even a fleeting respite from the hell their lives have become.

Kaufman (DENNIS HOPPER) lords over the Fiddlerís Green. To bring in much needed supplies for the occupants of the city heís hired a hardened group of mercenaries. Headed by Riley (SIMON BAKER), and his second-in-command, Cholo (JOHN LEGUIZAMO), they run retrieval missions outside the city, protected by their massive armored vehicle, Dead Reckoning.

Unrest and anarchy are on the rise among the cityís disenfranchised and, outside, the army of the dead is changing, evolving, learning to organize and communicate. When Kaufman shoots down Cholo in his hopes to buy a place among the elite of Fiddlerís Green he commandeers Dead Reckoning to extort enough money out of Kaufman so he find a new start. However, Riley is sent out to stop Cholo and retrieve Dead Reckoning for Kaufman. However, an army of evolving zombies is storming the city. Will Riley be able to stop Cholo and save the inhabitants of his city? Add a comment

The formula for HIGH TENSION: two young women, an isolated farmhouse, a psychotic killer, and one endless night. Working from with a basic premise, French writer/director Alexandre Aja and co-writer Gregory Levasseur have fashioned a dark nightmare that taps into our most primal fears. Despite the simplicity of their premise, Aja and Levasseur were careful to construct a script that hinges on numerous twists and turns. At the center of this horrific maelstrom is the lead for their film, Marie, a brooding tomboy who battles the ruthless killer.

It was far from an easy task to find a young actress to play the part and Aja and Levasseur met with almost every young actress in France. Unlike the disposable characters found in most horror fare, HIGH TENSION's Mare is a complex heroine whose emotional layers are revealed gradually as the tension mounts. Taking on the challenge of this intense story of murder and survival is French actress Câcile de France.

Ms. de France made her international film debut in Disney' s AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS in the lead role of Monique, the French artist who joins Phileas Fogg on his trek. Born in Belgium, Ms. De France moved to France when she was 17.However, she has been involved in theatre since she was 6 years old, and began her formal training with Jean-Paul Denizon, a protege of Peter Brook, while in France. Ms de France has been acclaimed for her wide range and chameleon like quality. She enjoys performing her own stunts. She received the coveted CESAR (equivalent to an Oscar)) for her performance in LíAUBERGE ESPAGNOLE, and she recently wrapped production on the sequel, LES POUPEES ROUSSES, in which Ms. de France reprises her role as Isabelle. She also received the Prix Louis Lumiere for Best New Actress in 2003, as well as the Best Actress award at the International Film Festival in Barcelona for HAUTE TENSION. She currently has several films in development for her in France, including the lead in the film about the turbulent life of the Belgian nun Sister Luc-Gabrielle (aka Sister Sourire) whose hit song "DOMINIQUE" knocked "LOUIE LOUIE" off the American charts in 1963, and who committed suicide in 1985.
