SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW is a state-of-the-art special effects movie that makes cinematic history as it strives to create a world never seen before. With more than 2000 effects shots, this feature uses live action shot against a blue screen and fills all the other details in digitally. More than six years, producer Jon Avnet found the founding that allowed first-time director Kerry Conran to take a six minute animated short and grow it into an alternated universe of breathtakingly lush, long-lost sci-fi worlds where pulp fiction fantasies come to life.

Producer Jon Avnet has directed and produced more than 50 motion pictures and television movies, in addition to serving as the chairman of the board of directors of the American Film Institute and chairman of the Center for Advanced Film Studies Advisory Board at the American Film Institute. Already in pre-production on several other projects, Avnet was eager to talk at length about this six minute film he saw that he would help bring into being and launch the create of a visionary filmmaker.

BY Joseph B. Mauceri

- Action film star Jet Li reunites produced by Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Professional) to bring to the screen the tale of Danny, an unfortunate man who knows little of life, except the brutal existence that his keeper has so crudely and cruelly fashioned for him.

UNLEASHED, directed by Louis Leterrier (The Transporter), takes place on the meanest streets of Glasgow, fiery gangster Bart, played by Bob Hoskins, is merciless with anyone he takes even a passing dislike. Bart maintains his chokehold through his enforcer Danny (Li), who he has kept since boyhood as a near-prisoner by his ìUncleî Bart and trained to attack and, if necessary to kill.

Dannyís chance encounter with soft-spoken blind piano tuner Sam played by Academy Award Winner Morgan Freeman, who allows Danny to experience a kindness and compassion for the first time in his life. It is Samís love of music that permits Danny to experience its transforming power. A gangland coup separates Danny from Bart and takes refuge with Sam and his spunky teenaged stepdaughter Victoria, Kerry Condon. Sam and Victoria open their home and hearts to Danny, but the mob will not give up so easily. Danny must fight to protect his new family and bury his troubled past.

The Deposition of Actress Lara Linneyís Defense in the Case of THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE. PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 06 September 2005 22:48
Reported BY Joseph B. Mauceri
{FEARSmag.com} - In The Screen Gemsí film THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE actress Laura Linney plays Erin Bruner, a high-profile defense lawyer who reluctantly agrees to represent Father Moore in exchange for the guarantee of a partnership at her law firm. As the trial progresses, Erinís cynicism and atheism are challenged by Father Mooreís unwavering faith and by the eerie, inexplicable events that surround the case.

While her first starring film role was in the 1995 cinematic adaptation of the Michael Crichton novel ìCongo,î actress Laura Linney has since earned her fair share of critical acclaim and award nominations. Linney earned her first Oscar nomination for her work in ìYou Can Count on Me,î and her second was for her work opposite Lima Neeson in ìKinsey.î Certainly one of the most sought after actresses working in Hollywood today, Linney still manages to occasionally return to Broadway, her first love.

FEARS: It was mention that you were a little bit concerned and apprehensive about doing this film?

Laura Linney: I was a little concerned. I wanted to make sure that this movie would be balanced, that both sides of the argument would be fully represented. I wanted to make sure it was a movie that was not going to tell people what to think, but just have them think in general. Add a comment

Casting Out Spirits with Director/Writer Scott Derrickson & Writer Paul Boardman. PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 05 September 2005 18:56
Reported by Joseph B. Mauceri.
{FERASmag} - Scott Derrickson: Graduated Biola University, a degree in Humanities, a degree in Communications, a minor in Theology. He graduated USC with a Masters in Film Production.

Paul Boardman: Graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of the South with degrees in English and Psychology. He received a special diploma for summer studios at St. Johnís College, Oxford. He received a Master of Arts in Creative Writing from John Hopkins University. He attended the USC Scholl of Cinema-Television, where he received the Jeffrey Jones Scholarship in Screenwriting.

This cinematic duo penned the screenplay for ìUrban Legends: Final Cutî for Phoenix Pictures and recently adapted the book Beware the Night for producer Jerry Bruckheimer. For Dimension, they wrote ìHellraiser: Inferno,î which Derrickson directed. Together they have penned screenplayís for Disneyís spiritual thriller ìMystic,î ìGhostingî for Dimension,î a re-write for Sonyís ìScarecrow,î and a science fiction epic for director Martin Scorsese.

In THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, the duo tackles a modern tale of an exorcism that deals more with questions of spirituality and belief that culpability under the law. What do they believe is the truth behind the events? Read on and decide for yourself!

FEARS: So I states on the poster ìbased on a true story.î How true is this movie, especially since there is the information at the end about the gravesite and the lawyerís case being turned over to study? Does it follow the actual court case?

Scott Derrickson: Iíll try to give you the most frank answer, because we always get asked that question. The true story is basically this; there was a girl who was officially recognized by the Catholic Church as being possessed. They authorized her exorcism. After a series of exorcisms, the priests that were involved were arrested and put on trial for negligent homicide. The verdict in that real trial is the verdict we have in the movie, which I donít want to give it away.

Other than that, everything in the movie should really be considered fictionalized. Other than the basic backbone of the story we just wanted to create the most compelling characters that we could and the most dramatically interesting scenarios that we could, to tell the best story that we could.
