I really enjoyed
watching this film. Its kind of a poor mans HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP.
A micro budget film crew is shooting a skin flick in a small, seaside Florida
town. At the same time, some of the locales are becoming snacks for sea
monsters that seem to be of need of the female kind. Shot on 16mm, director
Brett Piper is pretty ambitious, trying to shake free of his monetary limitations
by using miniatures, detailed creature make-up, space ships and laser guns.
The feel of the film is what I liked best. Its not terribly serious, but
its not overly silly either. It comes off rather cute and I found myself
laughing a few times. The two leads, Donna Fretscher, who plays Melody
Duncan a fish biologist and Nick Baldasare, who plays Mel Duncan the film
director, have a nice chemistry. The two actors have effective comic timing,
playing off each other and you honestly cant help but like them. Alex
Permie, who plays Rev. Rex Stoner a perverted priest, also left a strong
impression. This is a film that you will want to throw on when you want
a few good laughs and be entertained. The monster story really isnt the
focus and thats probably why the film worked so well. Id like to see
what the people behind this film make next. This is a promising beginning.
