An
alien is piling up destruction and death in Los Angeles, when a
strange FBI investigator Lloyd Gallagher (Kyle MacLachlan) joins
forces with a L.A. police Detective Tom Beck (Michael Nouri). Together
they must overcome their differences to beat this alien. The movie
is really about this strange relationship that is turbulent and
odd. Both actors are excellent in their portrayals and the film
has genuine warmth generated by these characters. It's the characters
that separate The Hidden from all the other alien jumping into body
movies that have been made.
This
is Jack Sholder's best film. From the performances to his other
directorial duties, Sholder's work is inspired and done with style.
The film has a nice flow and moves along with surprising results.
It's definitely an improvement over Nightmare On Elm Street 2 –
Freddy's Revenge.
The
special make-up effects by Kevin Yagher are done with skill and
effectiveness. The movie doesn't have a huge budget, so they come
as a nice bonus.
The
weakest part of the film is the score by Michael Convertino. I thought
his music lacked subtly, depth and sound quality in the recording.
Actress
Claudia Christian must be mentioned as she played Brenda Lee Van
Buren, a stripper who really captures our attention. Christian not
only catches our eye dancing on the stage, but also after the alien
invades her body and takes over her actions. She has a strong screen
presence and becomes something all of us would fear.
Listening
to the audio commentary, Jack Sholder comes off as arrogant and
pompous. Sholder never hesitates to mention his contributions and
which ideas he contributed. Tim Hunter is along for the commentary,
but he barely says anything.
