The Crier
EI Independent
Cinema
review by Terry

A man wants to get
back the woman of his dreams, so he makes a deal with an old witchthe
cost is unleashing The Crier; an evil incarnation of a woman, who had been
murdered two hundred years ago. The film really kicks things off with a
bang with an opening credits sequence that takes over nine minutes to finish.
The producers/director try to fit almost all the crew members into the
above the line credits. This is the first time Ive ever seen gaffer, 1st
assistant camera, 2nd assistant camera, best boy, dolly grip, key grip,
grip, sound mixer, assistant sound mixer, catering and other below the
line credits, listed in the above the line credits. These opening credits
are intercut with a long winded monologue that really bogs the film down.
Heres an idea of some of the monologue, I will return. I will kill your
children and your childrens children and their childrens children. Forever
and ever and ever and ever. In one scene, there is some nice lighting
at night by a pool side, provided by DP Anthony V. Ruggieri. Jason McComb,
the actor who plays Henry, the janitor/yardman character, is the best actor
in the film. He has a nice screen presence and kind of reminds me of a
young Jeffrey Combs. Though shot on film, the film feels like the work
of complete amateurs. This stems from the unprofessional opening credits,
stilted dialogue and very little action. The director is proud enough to
sign his name with his credit, I dont know if I would have done that.
This isnt something to proud of.
