ANCHOR BAY
1977
review
by Terry Wickham
This
is truly an underrated horror film. Director Elliot Silverstein
orchestrates mature direction that is tense and emotionally involving.
I loved the way Silverstein prepared scenes, never resorting to
anything over the top. Instead Silverstein masters subtly and the
payoff is in the scenes. There are five to ten scenes that will
stay with you and that is no easy feat.
Silverstein
goes for gradual build up, rather than immediate shock. He does
have scenes designed to make you jump, but they are handled with
a slight hand. Most of the time he uses silence (no music giving
away the surprise) or should I say just natural sound. You get comfortable
and don't expect anything to happen and that's when he lays it on
you. It's not even consistent or pattern based, so you really don't
see/feel it coming.
The
cast is strong. James Brolin is ideal to play Sheriff Wade Parent.
Kathleen Lloyd is very sympathetic as his girlfriend Lauren. I really
like actor John Morley (The Godfather, Deathdream) who plays Police
Chief Everett. The supporting characters are exceptionally cast
with RG. Armstrong, Ronny Cox, Eddie Little Sky and the Richards
sisters Kim & Kyle.
Without
a doubt the black sedan used in the film is as spooky and terrifying
as any automobile that has appeared on the screen. It's really a
unique care that looks both threatening and indestructible.
The
Utah desert locations give the film a great look and Leonard Rosenman
does a fine job with the score.
Because
of it's subject matter and the fact that it came out a couple years
after Jaws, most people would write this off as just a copy cat
to the shark blockbuster. Not so. This film is made with experienced
hands that know how to get under your skin and give you goose bumps.
