"They
ooze. They slime. They kill."
An
unfairly-overlooked entry in the "nature gone amok" sweepstakes,
Juan Piquer Simon's Slugs (or Slugs: The Movie
as the onscreen title boasts!) finally gets its due on home
video, thanks to the ever-vigilant archivists at Anchor Bay Entertainment.
Toxic
waste, that old reliable monster movie bugbear, has caused a small
town's population of garden-variety slugs (snails, sans
shells, in other words) to grow trout-sized, develop rows of
sharp teeth and a taste for meat. After offing an unlucky boater
in the pre-credits sequence, they proceed to chomp their way through
town (albeit very slowly--they are snails, after all).
Our
erstwhile hero, health inspector Mike Brady (no relation to the
famous architect, I presume), is the first to discover the toothsome
little critters, and since he's pretty much the only bright bulb
in town, spearheads a man-against-slug showdown in the underground
sewer system.
The
sparse plot is just mean-spirited enough to make you forget how
ridiculous the premise is (did I mention that they're killer snails?!).
Economical but effective gore effects provide plenty of gross-out
highlights (including a restaurant diner barfing up a mess of baby
slugs, and the unfortunate death of--sob!--a pet hamster). A cheesy
stock-music score and no-name acting talent that ranges from uninspired
to truly awful (the atrocious dubbing job doesn't help) firmly ground
the proceedings in '50's drive-in movie territory, albeit with an
'80's gore-film sensibility.
Anchor
Bay's letterboxed dvd transfer (1.85:1, 16 X 9 enhanced) is stunning.
The picture is sharp, the print is almost entirely free from wear,
and the colors are bright and gaudy. It's doubtful this movie has
ever looked this good, even in a theater. Now if Anchor Bay would
grab the rights to Simon's slasher classic Pieces ...
Pretty
much a bare-bones release, a Slugs theatrical trailer
is included, along with a nice reproduction of the original poster
art.
If
you're a fan of carnivorous-critters-run-amok flicks (and you wouldn't
be watching a movie called Slugs if you weren't), then
ooze right into your favorite chair, grab yourself a heaping plate
of escargot (don't forget the salt!) and party 'till the slugs come
home.
