Well-made independent film that carriers a disturbing aura. A medical
researcher Geoffrey Gaines (Stephen Ramsey) who experiments with
animals and his artist wife Lillian (Miriam Healy-Louie) move upstate
New York. They make the move so that Geoffrey can do his experiments
without any intrusion.
After Geoffrey gets set-up, he immerses himself into his work,
not letting much filter into his life, including Lillian. This causes
her to get bored and lonely and eventually seek out companionship
with a local ecologist Alex Vine (David van Tieghem). This relationship
develops over time, which comes off very real and natural. This
is a credit to the actors and Director Larry Fessenden.
We see the doctor start to mix different animal into all kinds
of abominations and this is where the film gets disturbing. The
effects are rather simple, but completely effective. Seeing some
of the monstrosities will stay with you after the movie is over.
Director Fessenden has a nice visual style. I wouldnÕt be surprised
if he got some of his experience shooting music videos. The upstate
New York locations stand out because theyÕre strong and distinct
places. The acting is quite good with all three main characters
leaving strong impressions. Larry Fessenden is a filmmaker to follow.
