The

The
third of four Mummy films made by Hammer Studios (following 1959's
The Mummy and 1964's Curse of the Mummy's Tomb
, and preceeding 1971's Blood from the Mummy's Tomb ) The
Mummy's Shroud was also the last Hammer film directed by
John Gilling (Plague of the Zombies , The Reptile
), and the last film to be shot at Hammer's landmark Bray Studios.
While not quite on a par with the 1959 Peter Cushing and Christopher
Lee classic, it is a reasonably solid effort with a good cast and
(considering its paltry budget) a few genuinely exciting moments.
In
1920, Sir Basil Walden (Plague of the Zombie' s Andre Morell)
leads an archeological expedition in search of the hidden tomb of
Kah-To-Bey, an heir to the Egyptian, uh, Pharoah-ship who,
4000 years ago, was exiled by his power-hungry uncle before he could
assume the throne. The party stumbles upon a hieroglyphic-carved
stone ("The Stone of Death"!) that, thanks to linguist Claire de
Sangre (The Conquerer Worm' s Maggie Kimberly), reveals the
location of the mummy's tomb. Foolishly ignoring the warnings of
the tomb's guardian, Hasmid Ali (Roger Delgado), the group defiles
Kah-To-Bey's final resting place, takes the mummy (and the mummy
of Prem, his faithful slave and guardian) back to Cairo, where,
wouldn't you know it, a sacred incantation revives Prem and sends
the lumbering, bandaged creature on a bloody trail of vengeance,
destroying all those who had dared set foot in the tomb (and who
can't seem to run very quickly)...
Anchor
Bay Entertainment presents The Mummy's Shroud in a pristine,
widescreen (1.66:1, 16X9 enhanced) transfer that is one of the best
of their always-stellar Hammer Collection. The image is razor-sharp
and crystal-clear, and the colors are well-balanced and bright.
The Dolby Digital mono soundtrack is also very good,
and nicely showcases Hammer vet Don Banks'
(Rasputin the Mad Monk , The Evil of Frankenstein
) strong music score.
A theatrical
trailer is included, along with two TV spots (one for a double feature,
paired with Frankenstein Created Woman ), and a 30-minute
episode of the Hammer TV series, "World of Hammer" entitled "MUMMIES,
WEREWOLVES & THE LIVING DEAD" (an episode is included on each
of Anchor Bay's Hammer DVD titles--this one previously appeared
on the Plague of the Zombies disc), narrated by the
late Oliver Reed.
Mummy
fans, Hammer Films fans (and especially fans of Anchor Bay's Hammer
Collection) will definitely want this excellent dvd in their collection.
Unsuspecting consumers lured in by the cover's gratuitous shot of
Maggie Kimberly's ample cleavage will be surprised when they discover
that there's nothing resembling it in the film (Hammer used the
same publicity bait-and-switch with The Mummy's Shroud' s
co-feature, Frankenstein Created Woman )!
