Beauty is the DVD for Jean Rollin's masterwork Fascination.
Never has this film appeared to crisp, so colorful, so clear. And
what better way to present a beautiful film filled with beautiful
people and beautiful images. There are many frameable images transferred
to this disc, as is quite evidently noticed in the first few minutes
at the abbatoir where all classes of people are consuming cow blood
to stave off anemia. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
A bandit makes off with the shared booty and holes up in a castle
with two particularly strange young women, one the beautiful sex
kitten Brigitte Lahaie. After much teasing and game-playing, and
a few attempts on him from his former cohorts in crime, the robber
must succumb tot he mad desires of the women in the castle, culminating
in a lesbian orgy of diaphonous nightie-weaing vampires, crawling
over each other for a taste of blood.
Magnificent images abound in this Rollin masterpiece, including
Lahaie wielding a large scythe, slashing her way towards the castle.
The doomed romanticism of Rollin's very French filmmaking is heightened
by the film's low budget.relying on the strong imagery of near-naked
bloodthirty young woman aginast the solemn locale of the castle.
Exotic and fascinating, Fascination clearly earns its title.
Philippe D'Aram's haunting score, righteously classic in its force
and power opens the film, and quickly sets the tone for this lovefeast
of horror cinema. Digitally cleaned and properly formatted, (although
missing its end credits and ending abruptly with a still frame),
Jean Rollin's Fascination is ready to be enjoyed again and again,
if not for repeated viewing, then at least as gorgeous wallpaper
for dressing the home.
