The
Directors - David Cronenberg
Winstar Video
1999
review
by Terry Wickham
Winstar
Video has joined forces with the American Film Institute to produce
a series called The Directors, which profiles today's most acclaimed
filmmakers. Each DVD runs an hour long, as they focus on the entire
career of each filmmaker.
The
first volume I had the pleasant opportunity to view was on David
Cronenberg. Cronenberg's body of work is examined and we get inside
information from the people who worked with him on most of his films.
Marilyn Chambers speaks about how she was cast in Rabid. Michael
Ironside talks about making Scanners and gives us rare stories of
just how strange Cronenberg's dreams are. Deborah Harry recalls
Videodrome. Holly Hunter praises Cronenberg's genius mind and passion
for making his uniquely personal films. William Dafoe and Jennifer
Jason Leigh go over Existenz.
Also
spread out over the DVD's running time is great photographs from
the movies, behind the scenes and Cronenberg goes into great detail
on his feelings about each of his films. I found this information
tremendously interesting. There is no other filmmaker like David
Cronenberg and this is a brilliant volume in an important collection
that every filmmaker and fan should own.
The
interviews are photographed with sharp, rich detail and the sound
is likewise high definition. I would go out of my way to obtain
this volume, as well as any of the other filmmakers AFI and Winstar
profile.
