The Boogeyman
Anchorbay Entertainment
1980
review by Terry Wickham
A brother
and sister witness and participate in a traumatizing murder. 20
Years later the siblings have grown up and are trying to come to
grips with what happened that shocking night. The problem is the
spirit of their mother's lover, the man they murdered, has manifested
itself into a mirror in the bedroom, where the murder took place.
When Lacey (Suzanna Love) returns to the scene of the crime, she
suddenly sees the ghost of the man in the reflection of the bedroom
mirror, causing her to smash the mirror to bits. Seven years bad
luck is an understatement as the spirit is set free and he's pissed.
The
movie is stiff, clunky and clumsily made by Ulli Lommel. The acting
is amateurish and barely watchable at times. The special effects
just barely get by and the music is obvious and heavy handed.
The
other thing that hurts the film is the obvious attempts to cash
in on elements from Halloween (POV shots with breathing), The Exorcist
(priest- possession scenes) and Amityville Horror (the same attic
windows are even used).
Never
the less, the scenic locations (Wisconsin) and late 70's horror
feel, make this film watchable. Anchor Bay has included 2 television
spots.
