review by Lee Peterson

Kyle (Scott Bairstow, from FOX-TV's Harsh Realm series) is an All-American high school student living a normal teenage life in suburbia. After the accidental death of his best friend, his family picks up and moves to a new town, where Kyle turns distant and vaguely rebellious. He broods, he grows his hair longer, he smokes. Heck, he even sasses his mom (Dee Wallace Stone from The Howling)!

Naturally, he falls in with the "wrong crowd", a gang of devil-worshipping kids led by the charismatic Shane (Eric Mabius from the upcoming The Crow 3:The Salvation).

Before you can say "It's like The Craft, only with boys", Kyle is pulled deep into a dark underworld of drugs, Satanic blood rituals, grave-robbing and terrible, terrible goth rock. Ex-New Kids on the Block Donnie Wahlberg (brother of Mark) supplies a cameo as a bisexual crackhead (exactly how you figured the New Kids would turn out). Between this and his great turn in The Sixth Sense, Wahlberg threatens to make Alexis Arquette completely obsolete.

A-Pix Entertainment has released Black Circle Boys on sell-through VHS priced at a very reasonable $14.99. The fullscreen transfer looks nice, with good colors and no noticeable cropping of the image. A fullscreen DVD is scheduled for March from Image Entertainment, with no extras mentioned.

I know there are people who eat this direct-to-video Goth angst stuff right up, but I am not one of them. It's never over-the-top enough to be much
fun, and the whole production feels like an episode of a teen TV drama (Party of 666?).
