SOUTH PARK: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
A Paramount Pictures release

review by Joe Mauceri

Trey Parker and Matt Stone use the backdrop of their hit Comedy Central animated series to tackle issues and criticism in grand burlesque style. You have not seen SOUTH PARK until you've seen the movie. Terence and Phillip debut their raunchy film, which the South Park regulars (Stan, Eric, Kyle and Kenny) sneak into. From that point onward, the film becomes an outrageously hilarious, over the top, equal opportunity offender. The controversy over the film escalates into a war between the United States and Canada. The prolog to the first fire fight is a USO show that will climax with the public execution of Terence and Philip. If they spill their blood on American soil, then Satan and Saddam Hussain will rise from hell and rule the world. Add a few musical numbers, animated sex stuff and mix! You are in for the shock of your life, as you laugh so hard that it hurts. Somebody call a priest! Parker and Stone's SOUTH PARK: Bigger, Longer and Uncut is possessed by the spirits of Lenny Bruce and George Carlin. Their animation is often reminiscent of the humorous visual styling of Monty Python's Flying Circus, which Terry Gilliam created. I left the theater feeling so dirty, but with gusto that reminded me of the first time I read a National Lampoon Magazine. I was equally amazed at the filmmakers' ability to satirize their own creation. Spawned from the early days of Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Animation Festivals, SOUTH PARK: Bigger, Longer and Uncut explodes onto the screen. From "The Simpsons" to "Beavis & Butthead," and "Ren and Stimpy," Parker and Stone's innovative writing sets SOUTH PARK as the crowing jewel in the deranged animation crown. This is one wicked film!
