THE
ADVENTURES OF
ROCKY
& BULLWINKLE
A
Universal Pictures release
review
by Joseph B. Mauceri
SYNOPSIS:
Having been trapped in reruns all these years, the three villains
of the "Rocky & Bullwinkle Show" escape into the real world.
The trio devises a plan to take over the Presidency, and the only
characters capable of stopping them are Rocket J Squirrel and Bullwinkle
J. Moose.
REVIEW: How do you take a 60's animated television
series and turn it into a feature film? By using cutting edge technology
to create the animated heros, and allow them to interact with live
actors in a screenplay that is part satire and part lampoon. Adding
to this fabulous farce is the level of physical comedy, of both
cartoons and live actors, that harkens back to the days of Buster
Keaton, the Keystone Cops and the classic Warner Bros. cartoons.
THE ADVENTURES OF ROCKY & BULLWINKLE works because it never
takes itself seriously. Right from the opening credits it anchors
itself in the realm of the fantastical, allowing the audience to
suspend their disbelief and enjoy the ride. The creators tap into
the genius of the original series by capturing its ability to provide
satirical appeal for a wide age demographic. The stick between Rocky
and Bullwinkle is timeless. Okay, sometimes it's funny "ha," and
funny "ha-ha," but it is never boring. The combination of action
and comedy keeps the film rolling along at a brisk pace.
I still can not figure out what possessed Robert De Niro to play
Fearless Leader, much less produce the film. Whatever his reasons,
De Niro is the perfect Fearless Leader, as well as Jason Alexander's
Boris. De Nrio does this "are you talking to me" bit that is a flawless
lampoon of his character from "Goodfellas." The numerous cameos
are wonderful, and I think it is the multiple appearances of Jonathan
Winters that accounts for a feeling to the film that is reminiscent
of the classic comedy "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World."
THE ADVENTURES OF ROCKY & BULLWINKLE is a nonstop laugh-fest.
The film has a few tender moments that give it a sense of sincerity
and heart. The satire never talks down to the audience, and the
jokes never come at the audience's expense. WARNING - this film
is so much fun that some audience members could split their sides
laughing, while others might possibly end up floating on the ceiling!
