MEET THE PARENTS
A DreamWorks & Universal Pictures release

review by Joseph B. Mauceri

specials artSYNOPSIS: Greg makes the trip to his girlfriend's home for her sister's wedding. Out of his element, Greg can do nothing right. Debbie tries to convince him that it is just his imagination, but he soon learns her father's dark secret. The revelation tips ths scales and Greg's presence is the catalyst for disaster that tests the foundation of Greg and Debbie's love.

REVIEW: Jay Roach, the acclaimed director of the Austin Powers films, takes the stressful situation of "meeting the parents" and turns into a comedic farce that at times is reminiscent of the classic "What's Up Doc." Chemistry between De Niro and Stiller sells the film as their sparing provides the truly funny moments. It is a complex contest of wills. There is a bit of the generation gap going, with Stiller's character going over board to impress. Roach places Stiller in physical comedy situations, putting him through his paces on a roof and in a pool. There is an aspect to Stiller's performance that has a wicked, sympathetic quality that kind of felt like Chaplin's Tramp.  The sequences here are not as intense as some of the scenes in "Something About Mary," or equal to the outlandish sketch work from the Powers films. The interaction between De Niro and Stiller kicks the performances of the other actors to the back seat, including a surprisingly weak showing by Owen Wilson. Their work just can't be seen behind the work of the afore mentioned duo. There is a sitcom sensibility to the production design and story, rather then a cinematic one. I think it is largely due more so to the production designs. True slapstick needs to be larger then life. So some of the over the top sequences should have a bit more "bang." MEET THE PARENTS is amusing, entertaining and often witty. The hardliners, De Niro and Stiller, will ensure a good showing opening weekend. However, a film that makes for an interesting date flick, I can think of a better way to spend the money on a date.
