CYBERWORLD 3D
Presented by Intel & released by IMAX

review by Joseph B. Mauceri

specials artSYNOPSIS: Phig is our synthetic hostess in a cybergallery of spectacular images. Along the way we encounter some old friends in a new 3D format that is nothing like you've experienced before. There is trouble in cyberland as three unwelcome guests ¯ Buzzed, Wired and Frazzled ¯ munch the place. Phig battles the trio in hopes of bringing them down before they can destroy the foundation of her cyberworld.

REVIEW: CYBERWORLD 3D not just another 3D film, it is a techno-journey into the realm of dreams. Previous 3D animation was to a degree flat, and there were problems with movement and textures. The new cutting-edge SANDEE animation technology pushes the envelop beyond what recently was achieved in "The Phantom Menace."

CYBERWORLD 3D heralds the first feature in IMAX's family animation series, which includes the forthcoming 3D feature "Gulliver's Travels."

The majority of the 3D segments in CYBERWORLD are recreations. A new process allows the animators to take computer animation, format it to fit the IMAX screen and add the additional camera angels to fully render the 3D experience. If you think you've seen the 3D Simpsons' episode think again. Equally amazing is the enhanced sequence of DreamWorks' "Antz." Several of the other sequences fluctuate between breathtaking and astounding. "Monkey Brain Sushi" appeals to the subconscious and "Tonight's Performance" is a visionary dream of H.G. Wells inspired images. At times you'll wish for seat belts as the sum total of these elements tricks the senses into experiencing the roller coaster motion, better then some motion control rides.

The story used to showcase these segments is a bit thin. What is interesting is the 3D animation as it is applied to the more traditional cartoon characters ¯ Buzzed, Wired and Frazzled. 15 minutes in length, it is typical Loony Tunes slapstick with high-tech window dressing. Hey, Elmer Fudd meets "The Terminator."

This fall has seen the release of two technological cinematic wonders. The re-release of the "The Exorcist" with digitally enhanced cinematography and sound, so that it becomes a new cinematic experience. CYBERWORLD 3D is the future of the form. The IMAX experience has evolved motion pictures into a truly immersive experience. It's funny, but the old tag line "experience the movies" takes on new meaning. This is the stuff that multiple visits are made of, and you can't get this at home!
