CHICKEN
RUN
A DreamWorks
release
review
by Joseph B. Mauceri
SYNOPSIS:
Ginger is a chick who dreams of a better place, beyond the fences
of Mrs. Tweedy's farm. The rule of the roost is if you don't produce
your egg quota you become dinner for the Tweedys. Unfortunately,
Mrs. Tweedy's has a get rich quick scheme that switches the emphasis
of the farm from eggs to chickens. Time is running out, Ginger
must finally "hatch" a successful plan before they all end up in
the gravy.
REVIEW: The Academy Award winning creators of the
"Wallace & Grumit" shorts take their unique style of animation
to feature length, and with stellar results. CHICKEN RUN taps into
the spirt of outstanding, classic animation that starts with a great
story. The film's opening sequence is bursting with references to
great films like "Stalag 17" and "The Great Escape," and a flair
for comedy that shows classic Warner Bros. animation influences.
The creators root the film firmly into that genre by creating a
chicken farm that looks like a prisoner of war camp. This is 3-D
claymation, which means moveable, bendable, figures, not drawings.
The characters have substance and presence, and the sets depth.
These sets are as wonderful to look at as anything ever created
for a feature on a Hollywood lot. At it all explodes that was only
the first ten minutes.
CHICKEN RUN is dazzling to look at, and once you're hooked it's
a great ride from beginning to end. Oh, and there's some fun stuff
in the credits as well. It builds, and builds, and I kept thinking
that they were never going to top the last bit. Punctuating these
moments is witty dialogue and cleaver visual gags. The interaction
between Ginger and Rocky is great, but it is the colorful cast of
animal characters that makes the film simply delightful.
When I watch a kids film I keep an eye on the children in the audience.
I may or may not like the film, but are the kids getting it? After
the opening sequence the kids were cheering, the adults applauding,
and the theater was filled with the echoes of laughter. CHICKEN
RUN is a fowltastic cinematic event that is the quintessential summer
blockbuster, audience pleaser. Nick Park and Peter Lord serve up
a super-sized claymation treat that is guaranteed to serve millions
all summer long!
