Cirque

JOURNEY
OF MAN
Sony Picture

review
by Joseph B. Mauceri
SYNOPSIS: The Cirque Du Soleil troupe
incorporates several performances form various shows to chronicle
humanity's life cycle. The end result is a breathtaking event that
allows you to experience this critically acclaimed group of artists
like never before. A genuine tour de force!
REVIEW: Cirque Du Soleil's JOURNEY OF MAN is a modern
wonder. It is an immersive entertainment event that comes alive
in breathtaking glory thanks to the IMAX 3-D experience. It is a
simple story, with universal archetypes, that draws audiences into
the drama of the performances. Director Keith Melton takes these
amazing performers out from under the big top. They are allowed
to display these wondrous feats against the majestic backdrop of
nature's exotic locations. Melton places the camera in key locations
so that our view point is integrated into the performance and we
are not just spectators. The 3-D is not simply 3-D for the sake
of 3-D. This new technology creates depth and texture. Unlike previous
IMAX films, the JOURNEY OF MAN awakens latent memories. You can
almost smell the ocean and the forests.
The film features performances from Cirque Du Soleil's Mystere,
Quidam, Saltimbanco, and "O." However, some of the costumes, as
brilliant as ever, have either been borrowed from other acts or
created specifically for the film. These costumes are tools that
accent each performance, which add additional texture to the
film. Their avant garde style also works on a subliminal level to
stir the emotions. Composer Benoit's score is moving, haunting and
lulls audiences into a hypnotic state so that they can believe that
they are flying along with the troupe.
Good theater can be as compelling and memorable as any of life's
experiences. Tales like "Les Miserables" touch our hearts, allowing
us to experience trials and triumphs, sorrows and joys, and help
us to maintain our grip on the human condition. THE JOURNEY OF MAN
is a defining moment in time that encompasses both the theatrical
and cinematic experiences into an unparalleled event unlike anything
that has come before.
