3000
MILES TO GRACELAND
A Warner Bros. release.
review
by Joseph B. Mauceri
SYNOPSIS:
A group of ex-cons plan to hit a Vegas casino during an International
Elvis convention. Along the way Michael meets a mother and son duo
that are as crooked as they are. Russell, Costner, Cox and an all
star cast in a Tarantino style bank heist kicked up a notch with
a bit
of modern folklore.
REVIEW:
Fledgling director Demian Lichtenstein storms onto the big screen,
big budget tale that has all the things guaranteed to have the right-wing
frothing at the mouth. As they say, if itıs too loud youıre too
old. 3000 MILES TO GRACELAND is 100% adult material.
The
plot basic - a heist that falls apart, leaving the two alpha males
on a collision course. Add in a romantic love interest, with a streetwise
son, and the ending is guaranteed to be a showdown ala ³Shane.²
The writers dress the bare necessities in modern American folklore
- bikers, Vegas, Elvis, convertibles with fins, and pretty much
everything you might find along Route 66. Shake off the Academy
Award season chill with a fast paced, out-of-control thrill ride.
Kurt
Russell still has the hustle, Kevin Costner has got the muscle and
when the duo collides the screen explodes. The supporting cast briefly
gets a brief moment in the spotlight to strut their stuff, but is
simply talented and expensive window dressing used to sell the film.
Russell looks great for his age, and young actor David Kaye shines
in his scenes. Heıs an edgier Macaulay Culkin. The leak link in
the chain, Courteney Cox. Even in her sex scenes with Kurt Russell,
she looks like sheıs faking it. It gets real tough in the scenes
where she is trying to be upset and crying. I really wasnıt sure
if she was actually laughing.
As
one friend would put it, this a ³greasy² popcorn flick. Another
would bring the pint of bourbon for the large coke. Either way,
3000 MILES TO GRACELAND is an adult round-trip flick Ż leave the
kids at home and take a walk on the wild side. Hey, itıs a guilty
pleasure for consenting adults.
